Combustible brown to black organic fossil sediment which are non-agglomerating and are often referred to as Low Rank Coals due to their lower calorific value or Brown Coals, due to their physical characteristics. This category includes both sub-bituminous coals and lignite.
Description:
These coals have gross calorific values less that 23 865 kJ/kg (5 700 kcal/kg) on an ash free but moist basis. The sub type of sub-bituminous coal refers to . non-agglomerating coal with a gross calorific value between 17 435 kJ/kg (4 165 kcal/kg) and 23 865 kJ/kg (5 700 kcal/kg) containing more than 31% volatile matter on a dry mineral matter free basis.
