Measure No. 2/03 of the Ministry of the Environment concerning an updated Foundation Deed of the Czech Geological Survey (31 July 2003)

    Main Activities:
Czech Geological Survey is the a state research institute with the statutory duties of the state geological survey in the Czech Republic based on the authorization of the Ministry of the Environment. CGS collects and assesses data on the geological composition of the state territory and provides them for the political, economical and environmental decision-making, for scientific and education purposes. CGS leads and participates in basic and interdisciplinary research projects. The main fields of expertise include: • Geological research and mapping (regional geological research, geological and thematic mapping, paleontological and biostratigraphical studies, geological heritage) • Geochemistry and environmental studies (interaction atmosphere – biosphere – hydrosphere – geosphere, monitoring of element budgets, acidification of forest soils, organic pollutants, radon risk) • Mineral resources and mining impact assessment (identification and assessment of resources, regional raw material policies, mitigation of mining impacts • Applied geology and natural risks (hydrogeological mapping and research, geological hazards, radioactive waste disposal, support of development planning) • Collection, permanent storage, professional processing and dissemination of results of geological work carried out in the Czech Republic in order to allow their use by the experts and public. • Creation, maintenance and updating of geological databases, operation of the archive and geological library. • Development of modern methods of digital cartography and GIS technologies including the system of sharing geoscientific maps. • Cooperation in the creation of national and global spatial information infrastructure (One Geology etc.) • Publishing and providing access to geological maps of the Czech Republic and maps derived from them. CGS is a member of international organizations of geological surveys – EuroGeoSurveys (EGS), International Consortium of Geological Surveys (ICOGS) and Geoscience Information Consortium (GIC).
