Details
    Level of authority:
    National
    Netherlands
    Formal Mandate:

The Ministry of Housing, Spatial Planning and the Environment (VROM) is responsible for the coordination of geo-information in the Netherlands. The Minister of VROM, advised by the Council for Geo-information (GI-beraad), has ordered the establishment of Geonovum as the National Spatial Data Infrastructure (NSDI) executive committee in the Netherlands. Our mission is to:
- develop and standardize the NSDI
- gather and spread knowledge on the NSDI
- make the NSDI more accessible to public parties in the Netherlands and the European Union.

In short, Geonovum is devoted to providing better access to geo-information in the public sector and to develop and maintain the required geo-standards to do so. In our role as enabler of the NSDI we connect public sector managers on a strategic level with the work floor professionals on a tactical and operational level.

The activities of Geonovum are subsidized by the Ministries of VROM, Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality (LNV) and Traffic, Public Works and Water Management (V&W), the Land Registry (Kadaster) and the Netherlands Institute of Applied Geoscience - National Geological Survey (TNO Bouw en Ondergrond).

    Main Activities:
In order to complete our mission Geonovum carries out the following tasks: - share and make accessible all the geo-information available in the Netherlands - develop high-quality and widely applicable standards and to monitor their use - be a think tank in the domain of geo-information - be the 'voice of’ the geo-information sector that provides the Minister of VROM and the Council for Geo-information with professional advice and relevant knowledge Geonovum does not carry out all its tasks itself but calls in third-party help where needed. Our strength is that we discuss, coordinate and monitor arrangements between the parties concerned with regard to how activities are to be carried out and completed within the public geo-sector.
    Comments:
As LMO for the Netherlands Geonovum: - actively participates in several drafting teams for the implementing rules - provides public and private parties in the geo-sector, that means data producers, users and transformers of geo-information, a platform to actively participate in and contribute to INSPIRE Geonovum e.g. informs and coordinates the consultation of the Dutch geo-sector on the implementing rules and on the call for expression of interest for development of data specifications to submit candidate specifications and participate in specification development.
