    Formal Mandate: 
    <p>Ifremer is the French research institute for exploitation of the sea.<br /> The ten orientations are to:</p> <p>- learn about ocean circulation to supplement the diagnosis of global change,<br /> - learn about and characterise marine biodiversity to better protect it,<br /> - develop enhanced value and use of biological resources through biotechnologies and bio-prospection,<br /> - contribute to sustainable fisheries and aquaculture,<br /> - promote sustainable use of mineral and energy resources,<br /> - supplement monitoring networks to meet global and European challenges,<br /> - design a nationwide environmental forecast system for coastal environments<br /> - optimise the oceanographic fleet as a major resource facility,<br /> - implement a national and European strategy for marine databases,<br /> - and promote shared capacity for technological innovation.</p>
    Main Activities: 
    Ifremer is one of the research institutes with the broadest range of skills and expertise worldwide about oceans. Underwater technologies, biodiversity, fisheries science and aquaculture, coastal environment, mineral resources, biotechnologies and operational oceanography are all part of its research missions and fields of skill and excellence. In addition it has to implement a national and European strategy for marine databases.
    Comments: 
    Ifremer is part of (or coordinator of) several European projects dealing with ocean observations and data management such as Argo, Seadatanet, Geoseas, Emodnet, etc. Ifremer has also developed strong relationships with international organisation such as IOC.
