Mission and Objectives: 
Compass are directly involved in both research and consulting work relating specifically to implementation of coastal and marine Spatial Data Infrastructure in Europe and globally. We currently work with EUCC - The Coastal Union - in the capacity of Information Policy Advisor and advise the Intergovernmental Oceanographc Commission's International Oceanographic Data and Information Project (IODE) on coastal and marine SDI issues. Our main objective with regard to this SDIC is to ensure that the marine and especially coastal communities are kept informed and represented in regard to development of the Implementing Rules.

Mandate: 
Although the organisation has no formal legal mandate, its main representative on this initiative, Senior SDI Expert, Roger Longhorn, is the Information Policy Advisor on the Advisory Board of EUCC - The Coastal Union - and works closely with the IOC's IODE Project Office in Oostende, Belgium.
Activities: 
Review of Implementing Rules relating to Metadata and Data Specifications, specifically on behalf of the marine and coastal science and management communities. Training actions for local and national governments on issues relating to INSPIRE, specifically implications of implementing the Implementing Rules as these become available. Research into marine/coastal SDI issues at local, national and regional level, which will be directly impacted upon by the INSPIRE Directive. Development of cost-benefit analysis methodologies relevant to SDI implementation (main role in the recently completed MOTIIVE INSPIRE IR project).
