Mission and Objectives: 
The group is part of the activity carried out under the Finnish Council for Geographic Information (FCGI) to implement the GI strategy developed by the FCGI for the time period 2005-2010. The main focus of the group is on the development of GI-related metadata recommendations, di-rectory and services as part of the Finnish SDI.

Mandate: 
The Finnish Council for Geographic Information (FCGI) has been nominated by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, which is also the national contact organisation for the INSPIRE process. This group (META) has been established by the FCGI to coordinate activities related to the devel-opment of the GI metadata content and services as part of the Finnish SDI strategy.
Activities: 
Developing the national vision of the ideal infrastructure of GI-related metadata directory and ser-vices in Finland; Supervising the development of national recommendations for GI metadata; Supporting the development of the national metadata directory and its services; Monitoring the national developments in the context of the Finnish SDI; Training and education on the relevant metadata standards and technologies.
Membership: 
All the important public organisations involved in GI-related activities in Finland are represented in the group. Also some private companies active in the GI-sector are represented.

    In Finland the first concrete process to develop interoperable GI infrastructure was initiated al-ready in late 80's. The work of this metadata group is originally based on that early experience.
