Mandate:
GIIDA is a CNR initiative (inter-departmental project) aiming to the design and development a multidisciplinary infrastructure for the management, processing and evaluation of Earth and environmental data.
Activities:
1. To recognize and survey the sites and system that will constitute the observation network; 2. Survey of the national initiatives for integrating the observation systems; 3. Survey of the international initiatives for integrating the observation systems; 4. To define the requirements and specifications for observation data acquisition 5. To define the requirements and specifications for observation data: metadata, cataloguing, and encoding model/languages; 6. To define the requirements and specifications for modeling resources interoperability and fruition; 7. To define the requirements and specifications for pre-processing schemas interoperability and fruition; 8. To define the requirements and specifications for the interoperability and fruition of value-added processing schemas; 9. To define the overall system architecture for resources interoperability (i.e. data, services, modeling servers, sensors, etc.) 10. To define the overall system architecture for security and data policy.
Membership:
GIIDA Project is comprised of seven thematic areas/domains: • Biodiversity; • Climate Changes; • Air Quality; • Soil and Water Quality; • Risks; • Infrastructures for Research and Public Administrations; • Sea and Marine resources GIIDA members are those who answered to a Call for Proposals(in Sept 2008)proposing 23 multidisciplinary pilots; they are: - 16 CNR Institutes from 5 Departments - 15 non-CNR Institutions (3 Regional administrations, 3 research centers, 4 universities)
Comments:
The CNR Dept. of earth and Environment (DTA) funded 7 post-doc research positions for GIIDA.

Previous Experience relevant for INSPIRE development
CNR has been active in GMES, GEOSS, and many FP6 and FP7 projects in the Environment, Space, ICT and e-infrastructure areas. The mission of DTA is to gather knowledge and predict the behaviour of the Earth system and its resources to help a sustainable future for the planet and its mankind. CNR is the leading
    Environmental application domains
DTA is tackling some of this century's key environmental issues as the Climate Change, Natural Hazards and Sustainability of Natural Resources. DTA delivers independent research, survey, technologies and knowledge transfer in the Earth and environmental sciences to advance knowledge of the planet as a complex and interacting system. Research activities cover the full range of the Earth science, including atmospheric, terrestrial and aquatic issues.
