Mission and Objectives: 
Aligned with the mission of the JRC, Maritime Affairs Unit is meant to provide customer-driven scientific and technical support for the conception, development, implementation and monitoring of EU Maritime policies.Aiming to serve the common interest of the Member States, while being independent of special interests, whether private or national.In this sense, the definition of common interoperable infrastructures for both data and services that may facilitate the sharing of data among all member states and stakeholders is essential. Policies for the Maritime environment are the Unit's focus. Moreover, Oceanographic and Meteorological Datasets are well known and widely used in the Unit's daily work.

The Unit is dynamically supporting the following main policy customers: Fisheries Control: FISH,CFCA; Maritime Borders Control:JLS,Frontex; Marine oil pollution:ENV,EMSA; Maritime Safety:TREN; Supply line Security:RELEX; Maritime Security:Council,EDA; Outside EU:RELEX,DEV.
Activities: 
The Unit is divided into 4 actions covering policies on the following contexts: CONTRAFFIC: risk analysis for the maritime containerized goods supply chain, ECCAIRS: multi-modal transport safety, FISHREG: support of the Common Fisheries Policy, VESPO: maritime safety and security areas. Several related research activities and Projects are running within the scope of these Actions.
