MAGGIS

Description
Organisation:
Working Group for the Management of Geotectonic data in GIS projects
Acronym:
MAGGIS
Details
Mission and Objectives:
Development of conceptual models and operative strategies to manage and share geotectonics knowledge in GIS-related informative systems. The goal of this activity is to get geotectonic data more understandable, usable and sharable and to help user in distinguishing data from interpretations. In fact, geological field data come mostly from observations of partially exposed objects: when they have to be reported on maps, interpretations (scientific theories or conceptual models) are needed to achieve relatively continuous map representations.Development of physical and logical model of geotectonic database, as well as adaptation of metadata classes to describe geological spatial data and relations between data and interpretations, are the objectives of the planned activities.
Formal Mandate:
None
Mandate:
Agreement between the Institut of Geoscience and Earth Resources of Italian National Council of Researches (CNR IGG) and the Piemonte Regional Agency for the Environmental Protection (ARPA Piemonte) in the frame of the National Program for the new Geological Map of Italy at 1:50000 scale (CARG Project, APAT)
Activities:
Description and representation of geotectonic knowledge related to survey of detailed (1:10000 scale) geological maps in GIS-related informative systems. Definition of proper ontologies for geological processes and appropriate metadata classes to enhance relations between data and interpretations. These activities are performed in the sphere of data collection, computerization, graphical representation and map editing.
Membership:
1) Institut of Geoscience and Earth Resources of Italian National Council of Researches (CNR IGG), section of Torino.2) Piemonte Regional Agency for the Environmental Protection (ARPA Piemonte)
Typology:
Thematic
