Expert Group on GIS under the Water Framework Directive (WFD)
Acronym:
WISE GIS
Details
Mission and Objectives:
To discuss issues of harmonisation of water-related GIS information, including harmonised datasets, coding, metadata, etc. The group develops GIS tools for the development of WISE. The group also coordinates with other activities, in particular INSPIRE, and follows relevant pilot projects (eg. RISE, ESTAT pilots).
Formal Mandate:
European Commission
Mandate:
Mandate provided by the Work Programme 2005/2006 for the WFD Common Implementation Strategy (cf EUROPA web page).
Activities:
Mandate provided by the Work Programme 2005/2006 for the WFD Common Implementation Strategy (cf EUROPA web page).
Membership:
1) officially nominated MS experts on water-related GIS data . 2) GIS experts of international River Basin Conventions. 3)experts from related projects (RISE, ). 4) experts from other EU bodies (ENV, JRC, ESTAT, EEA).
Comments:
The WISE GIS Expert Group (established under the WFD Implementation Strategy) is considered as an important SDIC to contribute actively to the definition of data specifications for water-related and hydrographic themes. This SDIC shall ensure a close coordination between the INSPIRE and the WISE (Water Information System for Europe) implementation, the latter being a pilot and a component of INSPIRE. WISE will cover all water-related data and information including, e.g. water quality, water quantity, flood and drought management, and marine quality. Therefore, other relevant projects or groups are welcome to join this SDIC. SDICs with overlaps in their scope are invited to link up and communicate closely with this key SDIC on water-related issues.
