Abstract

Technology and software solution that supports SDI building, promoted and recommended by the Head Office of Geodesy and Cartography (GUGiK), the main coordinator of SDI creating and functioning in Poland, is the SDI Module platform. It is one of the GEOPORTAL 2 project’s products – one of the biggest projects focusing on development of Infrastructure for Spatial Information in Poland (IIP), running by the GUGiK. The main goal of the SDI Module is to increase the number of network services published by the Polish public administration at different levels. Module SDI is an integrated collection of various software components, designed to create and manage local and regional SDI nodes. The main task of this tool is to store, manage and offer data and metadata that are at the disposal of this platform’s users, with the use of spatial data services, i.e. discovery, view and download services. Moreover, SDI Module enables to exchange of spatial data with other nodes of IIP (other users of SDI Module, such as government or self-government units) and ensures the synchronization of spatial databases with the use of spatial data services. SDI Module allows any entity that owns spatial data sets to offer standardized spatial data services, maintaining interoperability and standardizing access to data for the users of IIP. An entity using the SDI Module becomes a part of the IIP and thus gains the access to spatial data resources owned by the GUGiK and the ability to exchange (publish and download) data with other entities using this solution. Module SDI includes a few components, among others, spatial database, tools for managing the synchronization process between the local nodes and geospatial portal. The organizations of public administration can get the whole package of SDI Module software free of charge. They only need to sign an agreement concerning cooperation within using SDI Module with the Surveyor General of Poland. Particularly, the SDI Module is implemented in the whole Masovian Voivodeship, in 243 units (communes and districts), under special KNOWLEDGE BASE project. Besides, between 2014 and 2016 there were also conducted computer-based trainings for local government unit representatives in Poland. These trainings concerned the SDI Module operation and were commissioned by the GUGiK. This paper aim is to present the SDI Module functionality, as well as to review already existing and working local and regional SDI nodes in Poland, based on SDI Module technology.
