The SATURN demonstrator ‘Heavy Good Vehicle (HGV) router’ is a multi-platform software application designed to provide appropriate and compliant routing in urban areas based on the category of vehicle attributes, reducing congestion, noise and air pollution. Positioning from the mobile device integrated GNSS system is compared with the real-time data from a multi-constellation GNSS receiver which supports Galileo, aiming at increasing the signal accuracy and reliability particularly in urban environments. The application also draws on Open Source Geographical Information Systems to provide HGV specific appropriate routes compatible with an array of mobile devices.
The requirements of the system design were first established in consultation with the East Midlands (UK) Freight Quality Partnership and local authorities in Leicester and Bordeaux, to provide a system with the following characteristics
- It provides access to updated georeferenced local information,
- It is available as a low-cost and low-power consumption in mobile devices and desktop computers,
- It supports user-friendly interfaces,
- It is also accessible and adaptable by fleet managers
