(Submission #318)
Coverages and the Web Coverage Service (WCS) are adopted INSPIRE specifications, suitable for all spatio-temporal sensor, image, image timeseries, simulation, and statistics data. In terms of INSPIRE Annex themes this includes orthoimages, image timeseries, elevation data, thematic raster maps, weather forecasts, ocean data, and more.
Still, handling of coverages and operating WCSs raises lot of questions among the communities: is it tied to GML? how to handle different data formats? how to deal with coordinates and different coordinate systems? what operations can users perform with a WCS? can coverages also be served via WFS and WPS? how to handle timeseries? how to interface standard clients to a WCS?
These and more questions get addressed in this workshop. We introduce the coverage data and service model, explain relevant details, and show how to use it with the help of practical examples which participants can rerun on their laptop during the workshop or later. Presentation will use the rasdaman OGC/INSPIRE WCS Reference Implementation and will further make extensive use of existing services and learning material that is available on the Web.
At the end of this workshop, participants will understand how to represent standard raster data types as coverages. They will understand the principles of WCS and will be able to phrase WCS requests for several standard situations.
The presenter is editor of the OGC Coverage Implementation Schema (CIS) and WCS/WCPS suite. He is co-chair of the OGC Coverages Domain Working Group, WCS Standards Working Group, and Big Data Domain Working Group. In ISO he is engaged with the adoption of CIS and WCS. He is national delegate to INSPIRE.
