Metadata is an important component of INSPIRE implementation, and it is one of the first that has been deployed. There is a great trove of existing dataset and service metadata being managed in regional, national and EU-wide catalogues and portals. This data forms the basis of the monitoring and discovery components of INSPIRE.
However, not all is well in metadata land. Both the initial creation and the continued maintenance eat up a lot of resources. Metadata tends to get out of sync with other resources, which limits its usefulness. Furthermore, there is only limited re-use of metadata and the required tooling. In part, this is due to the large number of variants and profiles of the basic ISO standards.
In this presentation, we describe a set of integrated tools that cover metadata management from the actual creation of a profile over metadata generation to updates and maintenance. This set of tools is implemented as part of wetransform’s hale connect platform for spatial data infrastructures. Specifically, we look at:
- How tooling for metadata editing and validation can be generated from a formal profile description
- How metadata can be generated automatically
- How metadata could become more useful in a general web context
We present this work in the context of a joint project between the Landesamt für Geoinformation und Landesentwicklung Baden-Württemberg and wetransform, which has the objective to provide such a metadata toolkit for improved maintenance of the GDI-BW ISO profile.
