On the 23rd November 2017, the INSPIRE Directive reached a milestone. All EU member countries are obliged to provide their spatial data for the themes of INSPIRE Annex I in a compliant and interoperable way. Which of these INSPIRE spatial data sets and services are already in use? How can interested users get in touch with them and how can the SDI Germany support the public awareness of INSPIRE? One promising way to inspire users for applications of geospatial data and services in 'new' application areas is Germany`s “Map of the month” within the German spatial data infrastructure GDI-DE. Initially established in 2016, the application has been invented to present diverse thematic maps based on view services on the cover page of the German Geoportal.de. Following an internal evaluation of the concept, the „Map of the month“ has been relaunched in March 2018. The application does now focus on selected INSPIRE spatial data services under the motto “INSPIRE the users”. This new orientation on INSPIRE, on the one hand, draws particular attention to INSPIRE services that have been successfully transformed. On the other hand, the highlighted INSPIRE services support the potential use of the services. Different topics from national, federal state and/or municipal level are presented on the homepage monthly to show already usable INSPIRE Annex I services in Germany. According to the schedule, each of the 17 contact points at federal and state level has the possibility to propose one of their best INSPIRE services to be published as the “Map of the month” on the Geoportal.de. A teaser is derived from the abstract in the metadata of the selected service and is displayed next to the map. Additionally, the service provider and the originating source portal are referenced. This approach comes along with positive side effects. In preparation of the publication, it has been observed that the performance of the service has been improved and the metadata were optimized. Furthermore, access rights have been changed to enable the representation of specific view services as the “Map of the month”. The concept, the technical and organisational realisation as well as the marketing of the new “Map of the month” will be introduced. The rates in access, the positive effects as well as the lessons learned and a first sum up will be presented.
