General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is regulation related to privacy that has become operational at the start of this year. An aspect of GDPR is that organisations have to set up a registry with for each dataset containing privacy sensitive information their policy for protection, retention and necessity. The dutch national environment and health agency RIVM and the software company GeoCat have extended the GeoNetwork catalogue product to implement a GDPR registry inside an existing dataset registry, which is also used for open data and INSPIRE. Concretely RIVM has extended the INSPIRE metadata schema (iso19115) to support some of the GDPR attributes and asked their departments to fill both the INSPIRE fields (to support discovery) as well as the GDPR fields (to capture privacy information). With this exercise there were 2 main benefits; the size of the data catalog has increased and the effort to implement a GDPR registry was relatively low. The GDPR registry is available as open source software as a GeoNetwork Schema-plugin. Via the open source software community we hope others will join in the discussion and development of the plugin.
