Digital cartography register with SLDs and symbols on the web

Henrik Gulliksen Schüller, Norwegian Mapping Authority

In order to simplify use the users would like to have easy access to cartography and symbols. Proprietary softwares have their own systems for cartography. Inspire is advocating the use of SLD and a simple cartographies have been added to the documents on Inspire specifications.

Norway has developed 2 registries for digital cartography that are available as open source. The registers with registry services are published as part of the Norwegian Geoportal . Different data providers have developed their recommended cartographies and symbols.

SLD register: - The cartography register contains SLDs for a series of thematic data. The SLDs work together with GML-files. The URL to the register:

Symbol register - The symbol register has some packages of different symbols. Each symbol may be used individually. - The symbol register contains symbols on different formats, png, svg and tiff. SVG are vector graphics and there is a possibility to select colours, stoke type etc. - The symbols are in different types, positive, negative and with and without frames.

Openly available for use - The SLDs and symbols are open and can be used in public services and for value-adding. - The symbols can be used directly in services from any service provider, this also accounts to different Inspire stakeholders throughout Europe.

API – endpoints -URI’S - The symbols and SLDs can be downloaded from the register website of the Norwegian Geoportal. - Each symbol has a URI – a unique URL. Symbols can thus be referred to in the SLD-files and symbols and symbology can be rendered directly on the web: E.g.

Activate in QGIS - It is possible to use the SLDs with the datasets directly in QGIS. This makes the GML-data easy to use.

Open source – available at GitHub - The cartography register and the symbology register are published as open source at github. - - -
