Sentinels Synergy for Agriculture (SENSAGRI) is a Horizon 2020 project (2016-2019) aiming at providing Copernicus, the European Union Earth Observation program, with prototypes for new Land pan-European core services targeted to the agricultural sector. SENSAGRI exploits the synergy of Sentinel-1 radar and Sentinel-2 optical measurements to develop three prototype services, capable of near real time operations: (1) Surface Soil Moisture (SSM), (2) green and brown leaf area index (LAI) and (3) seasonal crop type mapping. In addition, SENSAGRI proposes four advanced proof-of-concept services: (i) yield/biomass, (ii) tillage change, (iii) irrigation and (iv) detailed regional crop maps. To calibrate and validate the developed algorithms, specific field campaigns are ongoing in four European agricultural test areas in Spain, France, Italy and Poland, which are representative of the European crop diversity, as well as in three additional sites in Ukraine, South Africa and Argentina. The first version of the prototypes is already validated and maps for the test sites are available at the project webGIS, which allow users to inspect the results and perform basic spatial operations and statistics’ extraction. From the analysis of the first validation results, the algorithms are being further refined to improve accuracy and precision, as well as to reduce processing time. This process is user-driven, since the definition of final products is based on the interaction with users and, especially, with the Copernicus Entrusted Entities.
