(Submission #376)
The continuous provision of accurate and timely information through coordinated and sustained Earth Observation (EO) together with INSPIRE data, Copernicus, and GCI information, is a key enabler for informed decision making, in response to regional/global challenges and towards the achievement of the UN SDGs and the implementation of relevant EU Directives. In this direction GEO-CRADLE (http://geocradle.eu/) coordinates and integrates state-of-the-art EO activities in the regions of North Africa, Middle East, and Balkans (NAMEBA) and develops links with GEO related initiatives towards GEOSS, contributing amongst others to EuroGEOSS and AfriGEOSS, but also to INSPIRE. GEO-CRADLE brings together key players representing the entire EO value chain and promotes the uptake and exploitation of EO activities in NAMEBA, based on cooperation, awareness raising, capacity building, open data sharing principles and interoperability. More specifically, it enhances the current knowledge of existing EO capacities in the region (through an ongoing Survey), it facilitates the cooperation between EO stakeholders (through an open Networking Platform and several Events), it identifies the gaps and the maturity level (through analysis) and boosts the Maturity of the different countries in the region, it enables the access to open geo-spatial and EO data (through an advanced user-friendly Regional Data Hub offering discoverable, viewable and downloadable open data and services and registering new open data and portals to GEOSS GCI, some of them already INSPIRE compliant), it showcases concrete ways of tackling regional challenges related to adaptation of climate change, improved food security & water extremes management, better access to raw materials and renewable energy (through innovative Feasibility Studies), and finally it proposes a Roadmap for the implementation of GEO, GEOSS and Copernicus in the three regions. GEO-CRADLE was launched as an EU H2020 Project with 25 partners from 3 continents, it was then upgraded to a GEO Community Activity, and it is soon expected to be further upgraded to a GEO Initiative. In parallel GEO-CRADLE has submitted three EUROGEOSS Expressions of Intent, while several of the feasibility studies have been considered among others in the development of EUROGEOSS initiative.
