Statistical grids usage examples

  • General

The INSPIRE Community Forum is now part of the INSPIRE helpdesk system, based on GitHub (, so please start there any new discussions.

The current platform will remain available in read only mode in its current form and URL address until 31/01/2021, then its content will be archived and then published in a different URL which will be announced when it becomes available.

Please use this topic to discuss examples of publishing statistical data on grids.

I would like to direct your attention to the group page describing the pan-European ETRS98-LAEA 1x1km grid created based on principles defined in the Geographical Grid Systems specification. It is used in pan-European projects focused on publishing grid statistics, e.g. the GEOSTAT project.

While the european grid is sufficient as a common reporting unit for all Member States, statisticians require other grid resolutions for more (or less) detailed data and that includes grid resolutions other than the powers of 10 (as defined in the Geographical Grid Systems specification). Therefore in the Statistical Units [SU] specification there is a grid package that allows to define any resolution or reference system - either in the StatisticalGrid feature type or in the StatisticalGridCell cell code.

NOTE: The european grid is also discussed in the Geographical Grid Systems subgroup here.

Identified issue #1: In the implementing rules for Statistical Units it is stated:

    (2) For pan-European usage, the Equal Area Grid defined in Section 2.2.1 of Annex II shall be used.

That means that for pan-European use the SU theme is limited to ETRS89-LAEA grids with cell sizes being a power of 10m (100m, 1km, 10km etc.). Do you think it should be permitted to use other resolutions on pan-European level (e.g. 2km, 5km)?
