OS Open Roads - comments welcome

By Peter PARSLOW

We (Ordnance Survey) have been commissioned by the UK Department of Transport to create a national road network dataset. We started working from the INSPIRE Transport theme road application schema. We have been working with the national & local highway authorities, and Transport for Scotland, to find their requirements. We have extended the INSPIRE Hydrography Network application schema, in an ELF-like way. This full work is at a quite early stage.

In the meantime we were encourage to make an open data network available, and we have done this by cutting down the full model (removing some of the smallest links, and a lot of the additional attributes).

I believe it complies with INSPIRE, except that it is currently only available in British National Grid (pending, hopefully, a new download service, with transformation built in). However, some of our extensions break the rules - e.g. moving formOfWay, and two simplified road names onto the link. We have done this to make the open data product easier to use.

Comments welcome, particularly on the approach we've taken to extending the INSPIRE schema in order to achieve wider usability with current software.
