Workshop "Global Reference Grid Systems for Big Geospatial Data"

  • General

The INSPIRE Community Forum is now part of the INSPIRE helpdesk system, based on GitHub (, so please start there any new discussions.

The current platform will remain available in read only mode in its current form and URL address until 31/01/2021, then its content will be archived and then published in a different URL which will be announced when it becomes available.

Production and provision of raster data is currently performed using different reference systems. Conversion of data from one to another makes interoperability of such kind of data sets difficult to achieve. Furthermore, it constitutes an issue of practicality, efficiency and data quality, because of the necessary resampling processes needed to address the mentioned conversion.

The need for a common geographical grid system for the provision and exchange of European coverage data in the INSPIRE & Copernicus context has been identified from the beginning of the discussions on the INSPIRE Thematic Clusters (See related discussion) and recently confirmed during the Workshop on Implementation and potential of INSPIRE coverage data and WCS (See workshop overview).

The JRC is organizing the workshop “Global Reference Grid Systems for Big Geospatial Data” - on 11-12 July 2017 - to discuss about the related aspects, specifically focusing on the following questions:

  • What are the costs and limitations of the current state of the art of global grids with respect to efficiency (storage and processing) and interoperability?

  • Is more convergence of global grid systems desirable and how can it be achieved?

  • Is a unique hierarchical global grid system (at least within domains such as COPERNICUS/INSPIRE?) realistic and what would be the major gains?

  • How to address the standardisation and certification of possible solution(s)?

Despite this is not an open event, the members of the Thematic Cluster are invited to discuss and share their views in the following discussion topic:

All the feedback collected from the community will be taken into account in this activity - Please participate!

Please, see more information within the attached document.
