14. HILUCS Topic: Water functions

Last updated by Lena Hallin-Pihlatie

Situation: Water surfaces have in most case not only one use or functions but several. So far, the description of water surfaces in HULICS is not yet tackled completely satisfying, admitted that it is a very difficult topic to handle.

Proposal: The EAGLE group suggests opening up a new header section for the uses and functions of water surfaces as DrinkingWater, IrrigationWater, FirefightingWater, ArtificialSnowWater, WaterRetentionArea, WaterEnergyReservoir, and others.

7_InlandWaterFunctions [EAGLE proposal]

This class includes the different uses for specifically water surfaces.
(EAGLE proposal, not yet in HILUCS)

7_1_DrinkingWater [EAGLE proposal]

This class applies for water bodies that are used as a source of drinking water.
(EAGLE proposal, not yet in HILUCS)

7_2_IrrigationWater [EAGLE proposal]

This class applies for water bodies that are used as a source of irrigation water.
(EAGLE proposal, not yet in HILUCS)

7_3_FirefightingWater [EAGLE proposal]

This class applies for water bodies that are used as a source of water for fire fighting activities.
(EAGLE proposal, not yet in HILUCS)

7_4_ArtificialSnowWater [EAGLE proposal]

This class applies for water bodies that are used as a source for artificial snow making in alpine skiing areas.
(EAGLE proposal, not yet in HILUCS)

7_5_WaterRetentionArea [EAGLE proposal]

This class applies for (permanent or temporary) water bodies that have the function as a retention area to hold back water run-off for flood protection reasons.
(EAGLE proposal, not yet in HILUCS)

7_6_WaterEnergyReservoir [EAGLE proposal]

This class applies for a water reservoir that is kept primarily for the production of electric energy with a water power plant by making use of the elevation energy of water in height which is transformed into kinetic energy to move turbines while falling.
