Consultation on the data-driven economy

Details

In June 2013, the EU endorsed the G8 Open Data Charter and, with other G8 members, committed to implementing a number of open data activities in the G8 members’ Collective Action Plan. It refers to INSPIRE as ‘a comprehensive framework for access to and reuse of geospatial information including electronic infrastructures (the INSPIRE Directive).

The 2014 COMMISSION NOTICE on 'Guidelines on recommended standard licences, datasets and charging for the reuse of documents (2014/C 240/01)' lists geospatial data and  earth observation and environment data as the top ranking thematic  said to be those in highest demand from re-users across the EU.

In this context and following the Commission Communication COM 2014(442) 'Towards a thriving data-driven economy',  the Commission launched in January 2015 a targeted stakeholder consultation in order to gather facts and views on the role and impacts of data-driven innovation in several economic sectors.

DG CONNECT, Unit G3 "Data Value Chain" would like to get input to their stakeholder consultation that will contribute to the definition of future initiatives for the data-driven economy. As part of this targeted consultation, the attached questionnaire will gather facts and views on the role and impacts of data-driven innovation in several economic sectors. It has two main objectives:

  1. to understand the use of (big) data analytics in decision-making, business processes and emerging business models, and
  2. to gather insights on the characteristics of a functioning data ecosystem in your specific domain and identify existing or potential barriers to the development of data-driven industrial sectors in Europe.

The questionnaire takes about twenty minutes to complete. The outcome will contribute to the definition of future initiatives for the data-driven economy. Replies and any additional input should be sent to CNECT-G3@ec.europa.eu.

The deadline for submissions is 15 September 2015.
